Digital App design:
The perfect alarm clock app.
Case Study: From failure to success in the App Store
A former Apple iOS developer called us after his app had failed on the App Store. His creation was an alarm clock app that was nothing short of beautiful, and included all the bells and whistles he could think of. Unfortunately, only four people purchased the app over a one-month time frame; this app was a very clear failure. Undissuaded, this developer called on rebel for help.
We began designing our new Alarm Clock app by doing a quick competitive analysis of available Alarm Clocks on the App Store and Google Play. There were roughly 600 free and paid apps that fit the description of ‘alarm clock.’
We then watched people use alarms in their homes just before they went to bed (yes, this is In-the-Wild research on steroids). Some of our findings were mundane, but all of this work was represented in the final design, which made setting an alarm on a cell phone as easy as possible, with little chance of mistakes.
The client priced his new alarm clock app at $.99. He cleared $10k in the first month. Apple subsequently purchased the app, and rebel expects an iteration of this alarm clock app in the native iOS in short order.
